Your loudest customer is not your roadmap

Every software company says it listens to its customers. The harder question is which customers, and what it costs to say yes.

John Toon's point is that development time spent on one very vocal account is time not spent on the quiet majority, and the quiet majority rarely complains. They just do not renew. That is a real trap in practice software, where a handful of large firms have the loudest voices and the smaller firms have the bigger numbers.

The trigger is Engager's August release. Now part of TaxCalc, it is aiming up from the small firm market it already had, and whether the roadmap follows the noise or the need is the thing to watch.

Leigh Stallard's counter is that customers describe the problem in the language of the tool they already have, so nobody asks for the thing that has not been invented yet. Somebody still has to take a position on where the work is going and build for that.
