Xero marketed accounts and tax filing straight at business owners

Companies House removed the ability for small businesses to file for free back in March. Xero built accounts and tax filing to fill the gap, which Ryan Pearcy has no problem with in principle.

The problem is what happened next. It was marketed directly to business owners, not to the firms holding those clients, and without giving UK firms any heads up that it was coming.

Heather Smith brings up Ben Richmond on stage at Xerocon in New Orleans, saying Xero would never sell directly to your clients. He is not there any more. Ryan Pearcy's view is that this is the thing that has annoyed people most, because the promise was made everywhere and repeatedly.

Indi Tatla adds the cultural read. American organisations say yes quickly to an opportunity and manage the downside just as quickly, and the negotiation styles and risk appetites are genuinely different. What bothers her is that the only route to an update for some of this was a social media page.

Ryan Pearcy's conclusion is that Xero now needs to go above and beyond to prove the point rather than simply state it.
