For twenty years the financial plan lived in a spreadsheet somebody built and nobody dared touch. Now the risk is an AI engine that gives a brilliant answer, a partner asks why, and nobody can explain where it came from. At least the spreadsheet fell over where you could see it.
John Toon has inherited his share of those spreadsheets, macros and all. Regulators are asking how to interpret what comes out of the black box, and he admits he couldn't tell you exactly how Claude or ChatGPT reached an answer either.
Until it's auditable and defensible, Ryan says, we're still dabbling.
