Did ticking boxes ever teach you anything? John Toon on training accountants now

John Toon doesn't think double entry, ticking off invoices on an audit or filling in tax computations ever taught him much beyond the mechanics. His argument is that the profession trains people that way out of habit, and he tips his hat to the Big Four, who want trainees reaching manager level in one year rather than four or five.

Then the car analogy. Nobody walks in front of the car waving a red flag any more, and an electric car doesn't have a gearbox at all, but the point of driving is still getting from A to B safely. Accounting is the same trip in a different car. Indi Tatla liked it, which doesn't happen often, and sees new starters getting years of experience packed into one.

The catch is bandwidth. Juniors will need mentoring, client meetings and real conversations much earlier, at a time when firms are still flat out with the manual work and the reviews. So where does the time come from?
